What Causes Shingle Blow-Offs and How to Address the Problem

Even new asphalt shingle roofs can experience shingle blow-offs. Tell-tale signs of this type of roof damage are shingles that are lifted or completely missing.

What Causes Shingle Blow-Offs And How To Address The Problem

In this blog post, Mass-Tech Roofing and Building Co. discusses what causes shingle blow-offs and how to address it.

Causes of Shingle Blow-Offs

Improper Nailing – Every shingle has a narrow strip that indicates proper nail placement. The nail of the overlapping shingle should catch the upper edge of the shingle underneath. If the shingles are nailed too high, they won’t catch the one beneath. This means that the shingles are more prone to blow-offs during high winds.

Excessive Overhang – Properly installed shingles hang over the edge of the roof between one to 1.5 inches or between 0.5 and 0.75 inches if there’s drip edge flashing. During high winds, too much overhang can make the shingles vulnerable to blow-off.

Aging – Depending on the quality of material and the elements they are exposed to, asphalt roofing can last for up to 25 years. The adhesives that secure shingles gradually lose their effectiveness as they age, making the shingles more prone to blow-off.

Repair or Replace?

You should consider a roof replacement if multiple parts of the roof are starting to fail, as this indicates that the system is at the end of its lifespan. While repairs will delay the need for a replacement, a new roof is the only true solution to this problem.

Replacing your old roof can also improve your home’s appearance. Make sure to hire a reputable contractor for your roof replacement. You can ask for referrals from your friends, neighbors, and family. Don’t forget to research your potential roofers and check online reviews.
