French Drains: Basic Facts and Installation Tips

Are there damp areas in your yard that never seem to dry up? Does water leak into your basement during heavy rain? If so, you might want to consider installing a French drain on your property.French Drains: Basic Facts And Installation Tips

In today’s post from Mass-Tech Roofing and Building Co., a top local roofing company, learn everything you need to know about French drains and whether your property could benefit from one.

How Do French Drains Work?

A French drain is basically a gravel-lined ditch typically built with an embedded pipe, which carries water away from the home. Its function can be likened to that of gutters, which collect rainwater as it runs off the roof. The French drain manages the water runoff at ground level. It’s useful in situations where water pools in lower or depressed spots in your yard. A French drain reroutes the flow of water to mitigate water pooling issues.

A French drain can also be used to prevent “wet” basements, which usually occur when water seeps through the foundation. A French drain essentially reroutes water near the foundation to keep it dry and avoid compromising the structure.

French Drain Installation Tips

When installing a French drain, you should consult with your roofer regarding your gutters, downspouts and drainage system. Here are a few things to keep in mind when installing a French drain:

  1. Surface Water – If you’re dealing with surface water, your French drain should be shallow. It should be installed horizontally across your property and directly uphill of the area that you want to dry out.
  2. Basement Water – If water is getting into your basement, you should install a deep French drain. It should run around the perimeter of your home at the footing level.
  3. Retaining Wall on a Hillside – If you’re constructing a retaining wall on a hillside, the French drain should be added behind the first course of stones or blocks.
